WhatsApp has introduced a new set of security features designed to help users protect their accounts from unauthorised access, strengthen account recovery and identify potentially suspicious calls.
The messaging platform said the latest upgrades are aimed at giving users greater control over their account security as scams and attempts to take over digital accounts continue to pose a growing concern.
The new measures include enhanced two-step verification, support for multiple passkeys and additional information about calls from unknown numbers.
According to WhatsApp, the new protections complement existing security measures, including end-to-end encryption.
New password option for two-step verification
Under the enhanced two-step verification system, users can now create a full password instead of relying only on the traditional six-digit PIN.
The password can include letters, numbers and special characters, providing an additional layer of protection against unauthorised access.
WhatsApp said the update is part of its effort to give users more options for securing their accounts and making informed decisions about their interactions on the platform.
WhatsApp expands passkeys
The platform is also expanding its passkey feature, allowing users to regain access to their accounts through fingerprint authentication, Face ID or their device’s screen lock instead of depending solely on passwords or SMS verification codes.
WhatsApp said more than one billion people have already set up passkeys, while users on both Android and iOS can now add multiple passkeys to the same account.
The development is expected to make account recovery more convenient, particularly for users who operate across multiple devices.
Unknown calls now come with more information
WhatsApp is also introducing additional information about calls from unknown numbers on Android devices.
Users may now be able to see whether an incoming caller’s number is associated with another country and whether the caller shares any WhatsApp groups with them.
The company said the additional context is intended to help users decide whether to answer, ignore or block unfamiliar callers.
According to WhatsApp, scammers can sometimes use unexpected calls and a sense of urgency to pressure people into making quick decisions.

The new features add to WhatsApp’s existing security and privacy tools, which allow users to block and report suspicious accounts and manage their privacy and security settings.
