The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities against issuing admission letters to candidates outside the board’s approved admission process.
The board maintained that it is the only authority legally empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, stated this while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja.
Aina explained that candidates could be misled into believing their admissions were valid when they received letters issued by institutions outside the officially approved process.
He noted that the appearance of an admission letter bearing an institution’s name could lead candidates to assume that their admission had been formally recognised.
Admissions Must Go Through CAPS
The registrar recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed all tertiary institutions to process admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
He warned that admissions conducted outside the platform would be considered illegal and invalid.
According to Aina, no institution is permitted to substitute its own admission letter for the official JAMB letter issued after a candidate accepts an admission offer through CAPS.
JAMB Urges Universities to Comply
The board urged universities engaging in the practice to stop issuing admission documents outside the approved procedure and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate official documents from JAMB.
The warning underscores the board’s position that compliance with CAPS is essential for the recognition and validity of admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Candidates are therefore advised to confirm their admission status on CAPS and follow the approved procedures before treating an admission offer as officially recognised.
