The Federal Government has approved ₦10 billion for the 2026 National Research Fund grant cycle of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), representing a 64.2 per cent increase from the ₦6.09 billion allocated to research projects in 2025.
TETFund announced the development in its 2026 National Research Fund Grant Cycle Call for Concept Notes, signed by its Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono.
The increased funding is aimed at strengthening research activities and improving the capacity of Nigerian researchers to contribute to national development.
According to TETFund, the application portal will open on August 31, 2026, with October 15, 2026 set as the deadline for submission of concept notes.
The Fund warned applicants that there will be no extension of the deadline.
The ₦10 billion grant will support research projects across 30 priority thematic areas, covering Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation; as well as Cross-Cutting research areas.
Who Can Apply?
Lecturers in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria are eligible to apply for the research grants.
TETFund said it would particularly encourage multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research involving scholars from different fields.
Applicants are required to submit concept notes through the National Research Fund online portal. Only projects considered fundable will proceed to the full proposal stage.
Successful Principal Investigators and at least one member of their research team may also be required to defend their proposals before the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee.
TETFund explained that the Principal Investigator must be institution-based, while the applicant’s institution will serve as the coordinating institution and guarantor for the proper utilisation of the research funds.
Following the evaluation process, successful proposals will be presented to the TETFund Board of Trustees for final approval and disbursement.

The increased allocation comes as the Federal Government seeks to strengthen research, innovation and knowledge production within Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
With the funding rising from ₦6.09 billion in 2025 to ₦10 billion in 2026, researchers in Nigerian public tertiary institutions now have access to a significantly larger pool of funding for projects addressing national and cross-sector challenges.
