Unpaid Salaries, Unresolved Demands: ASUU Shuts Down Plateau Varsity Indefinitely

Share

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has declared an indefinite strike, citing the university administration’s failure to satisfactorily address its six-point demands.

The union announced the industrial action on Wednesday following a congress meeting held after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11.

In a statement signed by the chapter’s Chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, ASUU said none of its major demands had been adequately resolved.

Among the union’s demands are the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, and the payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.

The lecturers also demanded the provision of safe and secure staff quarters, the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence, and an end to what they described as the intimidation of union leaders.

Another major demand is the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award.

ASUU said its congress remained convinced that the issues raised in its six-point charter had not been satisfactorily addressed despite the expiration of the ultimatum.

Following approval from the union’s National Executive Council, the chapter resolved to commence the industrial action.

The union has consequently directed all its members to suspend academic activities until further notice, potentially disrupting teaching and other academic activities at the institution.

The development adds to ongoing concerns over funding, staff welfare and working conditions in Nigeria’s university system, with students likely to bear the immediate impact of the prolonged dispute.
