Council of Legal Education Imposes 10-Year Moratorium on Atiba University Law Programme

Share

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has imposed a 10-year moratorium on the Faculty of Law at Atiba University in Oyo State over alleged deficiencies in facilities and violations of regulations governing legal education.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by Aderonke Osho, Secretary and Director of Administration of the CLE.

According to the council, the decision followed resolutions reached during its third-quarter hybrid meeting held on August 13, 2026, at the headquarters of the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, Abuja.

Why the ban was imposed

The CLE said it found that the university’s facilities were inappropriate and inadequate for establishing and operating a Faculty of Law.

The council also accused the institution of violating its admission policy by admitting and graduating students without obtaining the required regulatory approval.

The 10-year moratorium therefore prevents the university’s law programme from operating within the period covered by the regulatory sanction.

CLE cites legal education standards

The council described the moratorium as a regulatory measure intended to ensure that institutions offering legal education comply with prescribed standards.

It said the action was also aimed at protecting the quality, integrity and standards of legal education in Nigeria.

The development highlights the importance of regulatory approval and adequate facilities for universities seeking to establish or operate professional programmes such as law.

Students and prospective applicants considering Atiba University’s law programme should therefore verify the current regulatory status of the programme directly with the university and relevant regulatory authorities before making admission decisions.
