The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University (GSU) branch, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Gombe State Government over unresolved welfare concerns, unpaid allowances and alleged failure to implement agreements reached with the union.
The union warned that it would commence a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike if the issues are not addressed before the expiration of the ultimatum.
The decision was reached at a congress meeting on Tuesday following a report presented by the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) after its visitation to the branch.
In a notice signed by the branch Chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Aliyu Shelleng, ASUU said the ultimatum commenced on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
Among the issues raised by the union is the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, as well as the failure to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage consequential adjustment and pay accumulated arrears.
The lecturers also demanded payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) arrears covering the 2018/2019 to 2022/2023 academic sessions.
The union further accused the Gombe State Government of failing to honour agreements reached with ASUU, including the payment of salary arrears arising from the ₦30,000 minimum wage consequential adjustment between April 2019 and September 2024.
ASUU also listed outstanding arrears relating to the 25 per cent to 35 per cent wage award covering the period from January 2023 to September 2024.
The union said its decision to issue the ultimatum followed directives from its NEC and warned that academic activities at Gombe State University could be grounded indefinitely if the outstanding issues remain unresolved.
The notice partly read:
“The branch as directed by NEC resolved to commence a total, comprehensive and indefinite action to press home its demand upon the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum if the branch issues remained unaddressed. The ultimatum begins from today 11th August, 2026.”
ASUU urged the state government to use the 14-day period to address the outstanding demands and prevent a disruption of academic activities at the university.
As of the time of filing the report, the Gombe State Government had not issued an official response to the union’s ultimatum or demands.
