The Federal Government has unveiled the National Sports and Education Excellence Programme (N-SEEP), an ambitious initiative designed to combine quality education with elite sports development, nurture world-class athletes, create employment opportunities, strengthen national security, and position sports as a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy.
The programme, developed jointly by the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Sports Commission (NSC) under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, will establish Sports and Education Centres of Excellence in selected tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking at the official launch in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described N-SEEP as one of the most significant reforms in Nigeria’s education system, saying it goes beyond producing champions to developing skilled professionals for the sports industry.
“The future of sports lies not only in winning competitions but in developing people. Through this initiative, we are producing athletes who will also become coaches, sports scientists, physiotherapists, administrators, entrepreneurs, researchers and innovators. We are investing in human capital that will continue to serve our nation long after competitive careers have ended,” Alausa said.
The minister explained that the programme addresses a long-standing challenge faced by many talented Nigerian athletes who often have to choose between pursuing academic excellence and building successful sporting careers.
“For too long, many of our gifted athletes have sought opportunities abroad because we lacked a structured system that combines education with elite sports development. N-SEEP changes that narrative. We are building world-class institutions where Nigerian talents can learn, train and succeed at home while earning globally recognised qualifications,” he added.
According to Alausa, the initiative will gradually introduce structured sports development into basic and senior secondary schools, creating more opportunities for young Nigerians while promoting discipline, teamwork, and national unity. He added that the programme is also expected to help reduce youth involvement in crime by providing productive pathways through education and sports.
Beyond its educational impact, the minister highlighted the programme’s economic potential, noting that N-SEEP will encourage innovation, entrepreneurship, and increased private-sector investment in the sports industry.
He said the initiative is expected to generate thousands of jobs for young Nigerians while transforming sports into a key driver of sustainable economic growth and national development.
