OPay has announced plans to expand its ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship programme to 41 tertiary institutions across Nigeria by the end of 2026, reinforcing its long-term commitment to supporting students and widening access to higher education.
The expansion follows the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OPay and Miva Open University, which brings the number of tertiary institutions currently participating in the scholarship programme to 25.
The programme, which forms part of the broader OPay Scholars Programme, is designed to provide sustained financial support to Nigerian students pursuing tertiary education.
OPay said it plans to extend the initiative to 16 additional tertiary institutions before the end of 2026, bringing the total number of participating institutions to 41.
A 10-Year Commitment to Education
Unlike one-off education donations, OPay’s scholarship initiative is structured as a long-term programme spanning a decade.
The ₦1.2 billion scholarship fund is intended to provide continued assistance to students over the 10-year period, helping beneficiaries remain in school and focus on their studies despite financial challenges.
The partnership with Miva Open University further broadens the programme’s reach by including an institution built around technology-enabled and flexible approaches to higher education.
According to the company, the latest partnership reflects its intention to expand rather than scale back its investment in Nigerian students.
Investing in Nigeria’s Next Generation
OPay’s education initiative is part of a wider portfolio of programmes aimed at supporting young Nigerians.
These include the OPay National Innovation Challenge, implemented in partnership with Google and 3MTT, as well as OPay Futures.
The company said its investment in education is ultimately an investment in Nigeria’s future, as scholarship beneficiaries could go on to become professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators, teachers, engineers, technology specialists, healthcare workers and leaders.
More Institutions, More Opportunities
With 25 institutions now covered and another 16 expected to join by the end of 2026, the scholarship programme is set to reach students across an increasingly broad range of Nigerian tertiary institutions.
For beneficiaries and their families, the initiative could provide more than financial assistance. By helping students meet the cost of higher education, scholarships can reduce financial pressures that sometimes force young people to interrupt or abandon their studies.
OPay’s 10-year commitment therefore positions the scholarship programme as a long-term investment in education and human capital development in Nigeria, with the company signalling its intention to remain involved in supporting students well into the future.
