Akure, Ondo State – Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the appointment of Professor Tomola Obamuyi as the new Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

The appointment followed the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council after Professor Obamuyi emerged as the highest-ranked candidate among 15 contenders interviewed by the institution’s Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.

Professor Obamuyi, a distinguished scholar in Banking and Finance, will take over from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige.

According to the statement, the appointment was made in accordance with the provisions of the university’s governing laws and existing regulations, following the recommendation of the Governing Council chaired by Dr. Tunji Abayomi.

Before his appointment, Professor Obamuyi served as the Head of the Department of Banking and Finance at AAUA. He also made history as the first substantive Dean of the School of Management Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

A respected academic with an international reputation, Professor Obamuyi was recognised as the Best Professor of Banking and Finance in Africa in 2015 by the Africa Education Leadership Awards held in Mauritius. He has also contributed to quality assurance in higher education by serving on accreditation panels of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Beyond Nigeria, he has served as Chairperson and Subject Expert on the Review Panel for Namibia’s National Council for Higher Education and has presented research papers at academic conferences across Finland, the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden, Ireland, Ghana, Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, India, and the United States.

The state government expressed confidence that the new Vice-Chancellor’s extensive academic and administrative experience would strengthen AAUA’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned universities.

Governor Aiyedatiwa urged Professor Obamuyi to uphold the institution’s core values while promoting peace, innovation, academic excellence, and collaboration among staff, students, and other stakeholders.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the university in advancing excellence in teaching, research, and community service.
