Jos, Plateau State – Suspected gunmen launched a deadly attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos on Monday night, killing three security operatives in what appeared to be an attempt to breach one of Nigeria’s most prestigious policy institutions.
Sources revealed that the attackers struck at approximately 11:40 p.m., opening fire on security personnel guarding the facility and triggering a fierce gun battle.
A staff member of the institute, who spoke anonymously, said the assault came without warning, forcing security operatives to engage the attackers in a determined effort to prevent them from gaining access to the institution.
According to the source, three members of the security team lost their lives during the exchange of gunfire—two soldiers and a police officer attached to the institute’s security detail.
The source noted that the swift and coordinated response by security personnel successfully repelled the attackers, preventing them from advancing further into the facility and causing greater damage.
As of the time of filing this report, the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Residents of nearby communities were also shaken by the incident. Bulus Haruna, a resident of Kuru in Jos South Local Government Area, said prolonged gunfire sent panic through surrounding neighborhoods.
“We heard continuous gunshots for several minutes. Many residents were frightened and stayed indoors,” he said.
NIPSS Confirms Attack, Assures Safety
The management of NIPSS has officially confirmed the attack, assuring the public that the situation has been brought under control and that there is no threat to participants, staff, residents, or institute facilities.
In a statement issued by the Head of the Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel, the institute praised the prompt intervention of security agencies.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies. There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement said.
The institute further disclosed that security agencies have launched investigations into the incident and urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries are ongoing.
“As investigations continue, it would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope, or outcome of the event. The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms.”
NIPSS said it is working closely with relevant authorities and pledged to provide verified information as soon as it becomes available.
The management also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of the institute’s community and commended the professionalism and bravery displayed by security personnel during the attack.
