The management of Achievers University has alleged that a former staff member and several students were involved in a school fees fraud amounting to over N457 million.
In a statement released by the acting Vice-Chancellor, Oyesoji Aremu, the institution said an internal audit of students’ fee payments uncovered a scheme in which the university’s payment portal was manipulated.
According to the university, about 320 students allegedly paid their school fees into the personal account of a female staff member instead of the institution’s official account. The staff member was said to have used her access to clear the students’ outstanding fees on the university portal, despite the institution not receiving the payments.
The university disclosed that the fraud allegedly took place across three academic sessions 2023/2024, 2024/2025, and 2025/2026.
Aremu explained that the suspect was an alumnus of the university’s Accounting Department who later worked in the bursary unit before resigning from her position in April 2025.
“The exercise revealed that the fraud was masterminded by a female worker who previously graduated from the university and was later employed in the bursary department,” the statement said.
The university further alleged that students were encouraged to pay into the staff member’s account with promises of discounted fees and commissions.
According to the institution, 11 staff members, 34 students, and one external collaborator working at Federal Medical Centre Owo were also identified as agents who allegedly helped recruit students into the fraudulent scheme.
The acting Vice-Chancellor stated that six students directly linked to the former staff member, alongside the 320 students involved, would face the university’s disciplinary committee.
He also disclosed that the institution plans to review payment records of students who graduated from the university from 2024 onward as part of its ongoing investigation.
