The Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State has secured ₦53 million in TETFund research grants to fund two projects addressing insecurity and mosquito-borne diseases in Nigeria.

The grants were awarded under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s National Research Fund (NRF), according to the university’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya.

₦25m project targets banditry in Northern Nigeria

Professor Ado Jangargari will lead a ₦25 million research project titled:

“Tech for Peace: Engaging Northern Pastoralists in Non-Agricultural Livelihoods to Counter Banditry and Kidnapping.”

The project seeks to explore alternative livelihood opportunities for pastoralist communities as part of efforts to address factors contributing to banditry and kidnapping in Northern Nigeria.

₦28m project focuses on mosquito control

The second project, led by Professor Joshua Balogun, received ₦28 million.

Titled “Development of Indoor Carbon Dioxide Sequestration Machine (iCor-SeMa) for Diversionary Control of Mosquitoes in Nigeria,” the research aims to develop an innovative approach to mosquito control and public health protection.

Research projects to run for two years

Both projects are expected to run for 24 months, with the researchers tasked with delivering results capable of producing measurable impact in communities.

FUD Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Gumel, congratulated the researchers and urged them to adhere strictly to their timelines and ensure quality delivery.

He also expressed optimism that the university would secure more research funding, noting that academic staff had been encouraged to pursue opportunities through the TETFund National Research Fund and other funding platforms.

The university management said it would closely monitor the projects to ensure they meet TETFund’s objectives.

With ₦53 million now committed, FUD is positioning research as a tool for tackling two major Nigerian challenges — insecurity and mosquito-borne diseases.
