The Yola Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on both the federal and state governments to fully implement the 2025 agreement reached with the union, warning that continued delays could threaten peace and stability within Nigerian universities.
Speaking during a press conference in Yola on Tuesday themed “Protect Our Universities, Respect Our Agreement,” the union’s Zonal Coordinator, Dani Mamman, expressed concern over what he described as persistent non-compliance by governments eight years after negotiations began.
Mamman stated that commitments made on fair salaries, research funding, and innovation have either been ignored or only partially implemented. He accused both federal and state authorities of undermining academic freedom and equity through selective implementation of the agreement.
According to him, several state-owned universities within the Yola Zone, including Adamawa State University, Borno State University, Taraba State University, and Yobe State University, are yet to implement the 2025 agreement.
He urged state governors, who serve as Visitors to the universities, to immediately enforce the agreement in order to maintain industrial harmony across tertiary institutions.
“Today, we speak not only for lecturers but for every Nigerian who values education, fairness, and the future of the country,” Mamman said.
The union further alleged that the Federal Government has failed to inaugurate the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC), a body expected to oversee the execution of the December 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and remove bureaucratic obstacles affecting compliance.
ASUU also raised concerns over the partial payment of key salary components such as the Consolidated Academic and Tool Allowances (CATA), Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and Professorial Allowances (PA).
Mamman claimed that some university administrators selectively decide which allowances to pay, thereby worsening inequality among academic staff and destabilising the university system.
The ASUU Yola Zone covers institutions including Federal University Gashua, Modibbo Adama University, and University of Maiduguri, among others.
