2027 Polls: NYSC DG Urges Corps Members to Remain Apolitical
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on corps members across the country to remain apolitical and uphold neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NYSC boss gave the charge while addressing corps members during orientation camp activities, stressing the importance of discipline, professionalism, and responsible conduct both offline and on social media platforms. He reminded the young graduates that the integrity of the NYSC scheme depends heavily on their ability to serve the nation without political bias. (Punch Newspapers)

According to Nafiu, corps members are expected to play critical national roles during election periods, especially in areas such as voter education and election support services. However, he warned that such responsibilities must be carried out with complete neutrality and patriotism.

He also urged corps members to avoid being used by politicians or political groups for partisan activities capable of tarnishing the image of the scheme or threatening national unity. The DG emphasized that corps members should focus on promoting peace, national integration, and democratic values throughout their service year. (dailyrecord.ng)

Speaking further, Nafiu advised corps members to exercise caution in their use of social media, noting that careless online comments and politically charged content could create tension and misinformation ahead of the elections. He encouraged them to use digital platforms responsibly and contribute positively to national conversations. (Africa News Nation)

The NYSC leadership has consistently maintained a position of neutrality during election periods. Similar warnings were issued in previous election cycles, with the scheme repeatedly emphasizing that participation in electoral duties must be voluntary, professional, and non-partisan. Beyond politics, the Director-General encouraged corps members to maximize the opportunities provided by the NYSC scheme, particularly through the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. He advised them to cultivate financial discipline, develop entrepreneurial skills, and contribute meaningfully to community development projects in their places of primary assignment. As political activities gradually begin ahead of the 2027 elections, the NYSC’s message highlights the critical role young Nigerians must play in safeguarding democracy while maintaining peace, unity, and professionalism.
