The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released its updated list of 122 universities approved to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria, while warning prospective students against enrolling in unaccredited institutions.
In a public notice dated August 14, 2026, the Council said only universities with its approval are authorised to admit students into Law programmes.
It warned that students who gain admission into unapproved Law programmes will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School, potentially preventing them from progressing to professional legal training.
Council warns prospective Law students
The Council urged prospective students, parents and guardians to verify the accreditation status of any university before accepting admission to study Law.
It also warned universities against admitting students into LL.B programmes without the required approval, noting that institutions that violate the regulations governing legal education could face sanctions.
Some universities placed under admission moratorium
The approved list also identifies universities that are currently under moratorium on Law admissions.
These include:
- Baze University, Abuja — three-year moratorium covering 2023/2024 to 2025/2026.
- Lead City University, Ibadan — five-year moratorium covering 2023/2024 to 2027/2028.
- Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil — two-year moratorium covering 2024/2025 to 2025/2026.
Students are therefore advised to check the specific admission status of a university for the relevant academic session before applying.

What prospective students should do
Before applying for Law admission, candidates should confirm both the university’s CLE accreditation and its admission status for the relevant academic session. Being listed among approved institutions does not necessarily mean a university can admit new Law students during a period covered by a moratorium.
Bottom line: If you want to study Law in Nigeria, verify first, apply second. A Law admission from an unapproved programme could leave you unable to proceed to the Nigerian Law School.
