The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Kaduna State Government and university authorities over the failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The union warned that failure to address its demands could trigger a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike at the institution.
Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Monday, the ASUU-KASU Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed that more than 200 lecturers, including professors, have left the university, largely due to poor remuneration and unfavourable working conditions.
According to him, many of the affected academics have moved to newly established universities within Kaduna State and other parts of Nigeria in search of better conditions of service.
Lecturers’ Pay and Conditions at the Centre of Dispute
Abdullahi said the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, which provides improved conditions of service for university lecturers, took effect in January 2026 but has yet to be implemented at KASU.
He said the union had written to the university management, Governing Council and the state governor, urging them to domesticate and implement the agreement in line with the law establishing the institution.
The union expressed concern that KASU lecturers were increasingly becoming among the least-paid university academics in the country, despite the institution’s previous reputation for prioritising staff welfare.
ASUU warned that continued delays could also lead to the accumulation of salary arrears dating back to January 2026.
‘Exodus Could Damage Academic Standards’
The union said the departure of experienced lecturers, particularly professors and other senior academics, could have serious consequences for the university’s academic standards.
Abdullahi warned that replacing experienced academics would not be easy and that the institution could require years to recover from the loss of its senior teaching staff.
Beyond the federal agreement, ASUU-KASU also raised several unresolved local issues, including university autonomy, excessive workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance, wage awards and pension remittances.
Two Weeks to Act or Face Strike
The ultimatum followed a resolution reached by the ASUU-KASU Congress on August 12, 2026, in line with the National Executive Council’s position after its meeting at the University of Abuja earlier in the month.
The union urged the university management, state government and other stakeholders to act urgently to prevent industrial action and preserve stability at the institution.
ASUU-KASU also appealed to parents, students, community leaders and other well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in the dispute.
The union concluded by reaffirming its commitment to its demands, declaring: “Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta.”
