Award-winning Nigerian music star, Davido, has paid a visit to his alma mater, Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, where he reaffirmed the importance of education and announced plans to support the institution’s music department.
Speaking during the visit on Sunday, Davido dismissed the growing notion among some youths that “education is a scam,” stressing that his university experience played a major role in shaping his discipline and career success.
According to him, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Babcock University in 2015 remains one of his proudest achievements, adding that he often reminds his colleagues that he is a university graduate.
“I always say I went to school. It is something I’m proud of,” he said.
The singer also reflected on the challenges of balancing academics with his rising music career, noting that at some point he considered dropping out due to increasing fame and pressure from fans. However, he credited his father, his aunt, and supportive lecturers for encouraging him to complete his studies.
He further revealed that aside from meeting his wife at the university, discipline remains one of the most valuable lessons he took from Babcock.
During the visit, Davido was warmly received by students and the university management team led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, who described him as a proud ambassador of the institution.
Looking ahead, the music star pledged to contribute to the development of the university’s music department by helping establish a modern facility equipped with industry-standard tools and a dedicated building.
He explained that music and creative arts have become a major economic force in Nigeria, comparable to oil, and therefore deserve greater investment in higher education.
“Creativity is like oil right now. I want to support the music department with a proper building and modern equipment so students can compete globally,” he said.
Davido also encouraged young Nigerians to remain committed to their goals, work hard, and believe in the value of education, regardless of their field.
“Education is not a scam. There are successful people who didn’t go to school, but it is wrong to dismiss education,” he added.
In his remarks, Prof. Ojewole praised Davido’s achievements and described him as a global success story and a worthy representative of Babcock University, noting the longstanding relationship between the institution and the Adeleke family.
The visit ended with excitement as students gathered eagerly to capture moments with the music star, celebrating his return to the campus where part of his journey began.
