CSAE Predoctoral Fellow

Contract: Full time
Salary: Researcher grade 6: £35,681 – £41, 636 (with a discretionary range to £46, 476 annum)
Location: Oxford, UK
Deadline: 06 April, 12:00 noon BST
Apply: On the CORE HR University of Oxford website

The postholder will join Associate Professor Dennis Egger as an inaugural pre-doctoral fellow of a new research group for macro-experimental development at Oxford. The group will focus on combining experimentation at-scale with more structural approaches to economics to learn about the challenges and impacts of large-scale development interventions. Thematically, the research agenda will initially focus on the macroeconomic and general equilibrium impacts of cash transfers and social protection more broadly, particularly in East Africa (Malawi, Rwanda, and Ethiopia). The group will work with partner organisations, including local governments and the NGO GiveDirectly.

The post-holder would be embedded in a larger research group, learn from peers, doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows, and have access to the broader community of the Centre for the Study of African Economies [CSAE], an internationally renowned development economics research centre at the University of Oxford, with researchers based in the Department of Economics, the Blavatnik School of Government [BSG], and the Oxford Department for International Development [ODID] e several largescale randomized controlled trials and large-scale data collections – on the direct and general equilibrium impacts of cash transfers and social protection policies, including in the context of refugees – in the field or in preparation, in Malawi, Rwanda, and Ethiopia.

We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds, including those under-represented within higher education. No applicant or members of staff shall be unlawfully discriminated against on the basis of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. Employment with the University and progression within employment will be determined according to personal merit and the application of criteria related to the duties and conditions of the post. In all cases, the primary consideration will be the ability to perform the job. As stated in the University’s Equality Policy and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan, our commitment to equality and diversity goes hand in hand with our commitment to academic freedom and free speech.

How to apply: Applications must be submitted online. Applicants will be asked to upload a CV, a supporting statement demonstrating how they meet the selection criteria, and the names of two referees.
Closing date: 12:00 noon, 06 April 2026. Online interviews for shortlisted candidates are scheduled for early April 2026.
