The Kwara State Government has commenced the distribution of about 2,000 digital devices to 70 public senior secondary schools across the state’s 16 local government areas as part of efforts to strengthen digital literacy and improve learning outcomes.
The initiative is being implemented through the Kwara State Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Employment (AGILE) project of the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development.
Under the first phase, each beneficiary school will receive 25 digital devices to support technology-driven teaching and learning.
Flagging off the distribution in Ilorin on Friday, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his deputy, Kayode Alabi, said digital literacy had become essential for education and participation in the global economy.
The governor said the intervention was part of his administration’s efforts to integrate technology into education and prepare young people for an increasingly digital world.
“We are not merely distributing digital devices, we are equipping our children with the tools they need to compete and excel in an increasingly digital and knowledge-driven world,” AbdulRazaq said.
According to the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, the equipment includes 1,755 all-in-one desktop computers, 70 printers, 70 projectors and 70 motorised projector screens.
He added that each of the 70 schools had also been equipped with 10kVA solar power systems, internet connectivity and CCTV cameras to support the effective use and security of the facilities.
The government has also trained three teachers in each beneficiary school to operate and support the technology.
Olohungbebe said the AGILE project was designed to improve girls’ access to quality education, enhance learning outcomes and equip students with relevant digital and creative skills.
He noted that the initiative would continue beyond the first phase, urging beneficiary schools and host communities to protect the equipment and ensure that it was used strictly for educational purposes.
The State Coordinator of Kwara AGILE, Adeshina Azeez Salami, commended the state government and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative.
The devices were presented to representatives of selected schools, including United Secondary School, Ilorin; Government Girls Day Secondary School, Oke-Suna; Government Day Secondary School, Tanke; and St Anthony Secondary School, Ilorin.
