The Ebonyi State Executive Council has approved the implementation of a Smart Education Project in 43 public secondary schools, marking a major step toward integrating digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) into the state’s education system.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebeh, during a press briefing in Abakaliki following the Executive Council meeting.
Schools to Receive AI-Powered Learning Facilities
According to the commissioner, the project will deploy 989 HUAWEI IdeaHub Smart Interactive Boards across classrooms and laboratories in the selected schools.
The initiative will also establish 43 dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) classrooms, providing students with access to modern digital learning technologies.
To further strengthen science and technology education, the project includes:
- Virtual Physics and Chemistry laboratories.
- More than 500 pre-installed science experiments.
- Learning Management Systems (LMS).
- AI education platforms.
- 5,000 wireless interactive number pads to improve classroom participation and engagement.
Promoting Digital Literacy and AI Skills
Chief Omebeh said the Smart Education Project is designed to equip students with essential digital competencies, artificial intelligence knowledge, and technological skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving global digital economy.
He noted that the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to modernizing education and positioning Ebonyi as a leader in technology-driven learning in Nigeria.
According to him, exposing students to emerging technologies at an early stage will prepare them for future careers in science, technology, engineering, innovation, and other digital industries.
ICT University to Host Huawei Innovation Hub
The commissioner also disclosed that Governor Francis Nwifuru announced plans for the proposed Huawei Factory at the state’s ICT University in Oferekpe.
When completed, the facility is expected to serve as a technology and innovation hub for Ebonyi State and the wider African continent, supporting research, innovation, and digital skills development.
Business Reform Progress Report Approved
In addition to the education initiative, the Executive Council approved the submission of the 2025 Ebonyi State Business Enabling Reforms Action Plan (BERAP) Progress Report.
The report is a key requirement for the state to qualify for participation in the World Bank-supported State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) Programme in 2026.
According to the commissioner, the reforms demonstrate the state’s commitment to improving the ease of doing business, attracting private investment, and strengthening economic growth.
Governor Urges Continued Commitment
The Executive Council meeting also featured the swearing-in of Mrs. Rita Polycarp Nwite as the Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilisation.
Governor Nwifuru commended members of the Executive Council for their improved performance following the recent cabinet reshuffle and encouraged them to sustain their commitment to delivering quality governance under the administration’s People’s Charter of Needs agenda.
The Smart Education Project represents one of Ebonyi State’s most significant investments in digital learning, reflecting the growing emphasis on integrating technology and artificial intelligence into Nigeria’s education sector to prepare students for the future workforce.
