Kidnapped Oyo Schoolchildren, Teachers Regain Freedom After 56 Days

Share

The pupils and teachers who were abducted in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been freed after spending 56 days in captivity, following efforts by Nigerian security agencies.

The development was confirmed on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

Announcing the successful release, Onanuga praised the efforts of security personnel involved in the operation.

“Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies,” he wrote.

While the victims’ freedom has been confirmed, authorities have not yet disclosed how the operation was conducted.

It is still unclear whether the victims were rescued during a security operation, released following negotiations with their captors, or freed after the payment of any ransom.

Security agencies have also not provided information on the health condition of the rescued pupils and teachers, nor have they announced whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the abduction.

The kidnapping had generated widespread concern across Nigeria, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect schools, students and teachers from criminal attacks.

Government officials are expected to provide additional details as investigations continue and formal briefings are released.
