Abia Hosts Nigeria’s First University Manufacturing Innovation Hub

Share

Nigeria has launched its first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, marking a major step toward strengthening innovation, manufacturing and entrepreneurship in higher education.

The pioneering facility, unveiled on Monday in Abia State, is a collaborative initiative involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the Abia State Government.

Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima at the inauguration, the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, described the project as a strategic investment designed to transform universities into centres for innovation, entrepreneurship, research commercialisation and job creation.

He said the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning higher education as a driver of industrial development and economic growth, stressing that universities must evolve beyond teaching and research to become engines of technology transfer, enterprise development and industrial competitiveness.

According to him, the Manu-Tech UniPod is more than a new university facility, describing it as part of a broader national vision to make Nigerian universities catalysts for industrial transformation, innovation and sustainable economic development.

He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to building an education system that nurtures talent, accelerates industrialisation and supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition of growing Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

In his keynote address titled Science Meets Enterprise, Alex Otti said the decision to establish the innovation hub in Abia demonstrates the confidence that the Federal Government and UNDP have in the state’s capacity to become a leading centre for innovation and economic development.

He noted that the partnership was already producing tangible results and expressed appreciation to the collaborating organisations for selecting Abia as the host state.

Speaking at the event, Ahunna Eziakonwa described the UniPod as more than a physical structure, saying it represents a commitment to unlocking the creativity and innovative potential of Africa’s young people.

She said the facility would create an environment where engineering, business, technology and social enterprise intersect, encouraging collaboration, experimentation and innovation across disciplines.

Also addressing participants, Elsie Attafuah described the launch as part of a growing innovation movement across Nigeria.

She said the project aligns with UNDP’s partnership with Abia State to position the state as Nigeria’s leading hub for innovation-driven industrial transformation.

Attafuah also acknowledged the contributions of TETFund under the leadership of Sonny Echono, noting that the agency continues to support strategic infrastructure development in Nigerian universities.

She revealed that UNDP is mobilising $1 billion to develop Africa’s largest innovation ecosystem, with plans to support 10,000 startups, help 1,000 high-growth businesses scale, improve the livelihoods of over 100 million people, and generate $10 billion in economic value across the continent over the next decade.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Ursala Akanwa, described the commissioning as a historic milestone for the institution.

She said the innovation hub fulfils the university’s mission of leveraging science, technology and innovation to advance agriculture, manufacturing, entrepreneurship and national development.
