Nigerian Government to Launch Digital Platform for School Census, Public Access to Education Data

Share

The Federal Government will officially launch the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) on Wednesday, marking a major step toward digitising Nigeria’s education sector and improving access to reliable education data.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, the platform will serve as a central database for schools, learners, teachers, and education infrastructure across the country. It will also provide public access to selected education data, promoting transparency and evidence-based decision-making.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the initiative is designed to eliminate fragmented education records, strengthen planning and policymaking, improve accountability, and enhance service delivery throughout Nigeria’s education system.

As part of the launch, the ministry will also inaugurate the DNEMIS State Implementation Teams to support nationwide deployment of the platform.

The digital platform is being implemented under the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), a key reform of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). The ministry has also introduced the Learner Identification Number (LIN), which provides every student with a unique academic identity throughout their educational journey.

Speaking during a pre-launch media briefing in Abuja, the Minister’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications and E-Learning, Mojoyin Adebajo, explained that DNEMIS was developed using the globally recognised District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) platform to modernise education administration and strengthen data-driven governance.

She noted that the system will digitise the Annual School Census, replacing manual data collection with a fully integrated digital process capable of generating accurate, real-time information on schools, students, teachers, and educational facilities.

One of the platform’s major innovations is the Public DNEMIS Portal, which will make selected official education data available to researchers, policymakers, journalists, development partners, civil society organisations, and members of the public. The ministry believes this will improve transparency, increase access to credible information, and encourage greater stakeholder participation in shaping Nigeria’s education sector.

The ministry also acknowledged the technical support provided by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the University of Oslo, describing the collaboration as a significant contribution to advancing sustainable education reforms in Nigeria.

National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit in the Office of the Minister of Education, Adebayo Onigbanjo, said more than 32 million students have already been enrolled on the DNEMIS platform.

He explained that the initiative was created to address long-standing challenges caused by fragmented and inconsistent education data, which have hindered effective planning, budgeting, monitoring, and policymaking.

According to Onigbanjo, DNEMIS will provide timely, reliable, and accessible education data while ensuring that every learner, teacher, school, and public investment in education is captured within a unified national database.
