Abuja – The Federal Government has dismissed reports claiming that the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS) was hacked, insisting that the platform remains fully secure and that no cyberattack occurred.
The clarification came after some users encountered security warning messages while accessing the platform, raising concerns about a possible breach of the country’s education data system.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, explained that the incident was caused by a technical issue related to the platform’s Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate configuration and not a cybersecurity attack.
According to the ministry, the warning was linked to secure access certification at the hosting level and did not compromise any data stored on the system.
“The incident was purely technical in nature and did not involve any unauthorised access to the system, data loss, data alteration, or exposure of sensitive information,” the ministry stated.
The ministry revealed that its technical team worked closely with the hosting service provider to address the issue immediately after it was detected, and normal operations have since been restored.
No Breach, No Data Loss
The government strongly refuted reports suggesting that hackers had gained access to the platform, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.
“At no time was the NEMIS platform hacked, breached, or subjected to any cyberattack. The integrity, confidentiality, and availability of data on the platform remain fully intact,” the statement added.
Officials further explained that browser security alerts and SSL certificate warnings are common technical occurrences and should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a cyberattack.
What is NEMIS?
The Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS) serves as the Federal Government’s central education data platform, supporting the collection, management, and analysis of educational statistics across the country.
The ministry reassured stakeholders that robust cybersecurity measures remain in place, including continuous system monitoring, security safeguards, and regular assessments to protect the platform and ensure uninterrupted access for authorized users.
The government also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the security and reliability of Nigeria’s education data infrastructure.
