FG, FirstBank Push Women’s Vocational Skills for Jobs

Share
The Federal Government, in partnership with FirstBank Nigeria and other development stakeholders, has intensified efforts to empower Nigerian women through vocational training and entrepreneurship programmes aimed at reducing unemployment and poverty.

The initiative was highlighted during the graduation ceremony of 50 women who completed a vocational and entrepreneurship training programme organised by FirstBank in collaboration with the African Projects Development Centre in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

Representing the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Saratu Salawu described skill acquisition as a vital solution to unemployment, economic inequality, and poverty in Nigeria. She encouraged beneficiaries to use the knowledge gained to become self-reliant and productive members of society.

According to her, vocational skills provide opportunities for women and youths to create sustainable livelihoods instead of depending solely on white-collar jobs.

The programme, known as the “You First Fashionistas Training Programme,” focuses on practical training in fashion design, hairstyling, and makeup artistry. It was launched to equip women with employable and income-generating skills within Nigeria’s growing creative and beauty industry.

Speaking at the event, representatives of the Federal Capital Territory Women Affairs Secretariat praised the programme, noting that Nigerian women are increasingly showing readiness to contribute meaningfully to economic development and entrepreneurship.

FirstBank said the initiative aligns with its commitment to youth and women empowerment through sustainable development programmes. The bank disclosed that participants have already started producing clothing and beauty products for commercial purposes, helping them transition from job seekers to job creators.

The financial institution further revealed that the partnership with APDC aims to empower 200 women within one year through four separate training cohorts.

Managing Director of the APDC, Chiji Ojukwu, stated that the organisation has trained nearly 10,000 youths in various vocational sectors over the last eight years, while about 500 women have benefited from its fashion and beauty programmes.

He added that the organisation plans to host a fashion fair in 2027 where beneficiaries will showcase their products and services to investors and customers.

The programme comes amid growing national efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education in Nigeria, as the Federal Government continues to encourage practical skill acquisition as a pathway to employment, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.
