The African Union (AU) has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 edition of its Innovating Education in Africa (IEA) programme, offering grants of up to $50,000 to support scalable education solutions across the continent.
The initiative, unveiled by the AU’s Department of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, is aimed at tackling persistent challenges in Africa’s education and skills development systems. Innovators from AU Member States are invited to apply before the April 30, 2026 deadline.
According to the AU, the programme comes at a time when the continent continues to face structural issues such as limited access to education, weak learning outcomes, and a widening gap between education and labour market needs. The organisation noted that about 20% of children aged 6–11 are out of school, increasing to 33% among those aged 12–14, while nearly 60% of youths aged 15–17 are excluded from education, with girls disproportionately affected.
Selected applicants will benefit from funding, increased visibility, and opportunities to engage directly with policymakers and development partners to expand their innovations.
The 2026 edition broadens its scope to cover innovations in basic and secondary education, higher education, and technical and vocational training. It will prioritise practical, scalable solutions that enhance learning outcomes, support teacher development, and align education systems with labour market demands.
Key focus areas include AI-powered learning and assessment tools, digital universities, robotics and STEM education, green skills development, and industry-led apprenticeship programmes. The AU also emphasised the importance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, alongside solutions that address data privacy and the ethical use of technology in education.
To be eligible, applicants must be citizens of AU Member States and lead organisations that are legally registered and operational within the continent. Submissions are to be made online in English or French and must include a concise problem statement, a detailed description of the innovation and its implementation model, performance outcomes, and evidence of alignment with AU frameworks such as CESA, CTVET strategies, STISA-2034, and the AU Continental AI Strategy.
Applicants are also required to provide documentation of business registration and operational licenses. The submission deadline is April 30, 2026, at 23:00 EAT (GMT+3), while inquiries can be directed to the AU’s Education and Skills Advisor, Chigozie Emmanuel Okonkwo.
Launched in 2018, the Innovating Education in Africa initiative has supported the adoption of transformative education solutions across the continent. So far, it has engaged more than 1,500 stakeholders, promoted 180 innovations, and mobilised up to $1 million in funding for education-focused projects.
The AU said the 2026 programme will shortlist a select number of finalists, who will receive support to further scale their solutions and drive impact across Africa’s education sector.
