ASUU Launches ‘Sports Fiesta’ to Combat Stress and Boost Longevity

In a move to swap chalkboards for tracksuits, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI), has kicked off a week-long sporting event aimed at tackling a grim reality: the rising rate of stress-related deaths among Nigerian academics.

The “Sports Fiesta” isn’t just about competition; it’s a proactive health intervention. Here are the highlights of the initiative:

Exercise as Medicine

The event was officially opened by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, who brought his expertise as a cardiovascular physiologist to the field. He emphasized that even 30 minutes of daily activity is a game-changer for brain function and life expectancy.

“As a cardiovascular scientist, the importance of exercise cannot be over-emphasized,” Nwachukwu noted, pledging the institution’s full support for a healthier workforce.

The “Three-Pronged” Approach

Dr. Louis Omenyi, ASUU AEFUNAI Chairperson, explained that the week is built on three pillars designed to support both staff and students:

  • Physical Wellness: Competitions in football, track events (100m and 50m), volleyball, and lawn tennis.

  • Preventive Health: Dedicated sessions for medical check-ups to catch stress-related issues early.

  • Social Responsibility: A massive expansion of the ASUU scholarship scheme.

Combatting Academic Burnout

The initiative stems from a directive by the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC). Following a worrying trend of lecturers passing away due to work-related exhaustion and poor work-life balance, the union is now mandating “relaxation, bonding, and preventive healthcare” across its 90 branches.

Investing in the Future

Proving that the union’s heart is as big as its competitive spirit, the AEFUNAI branch significantly boosted its scholarship outreach. While the national body provides N200,000 to two indigent students per branch, the AEFUNAI branch sponsored an additional 10 students, bringing the total number of local beneficiaries to 12.

This shift toward internal wellness suggests a new era for ASUU—one where advocating for better funding goes hand-in-hand with ensuring the professors are healthy enough to enjoy it.
