FG Unveils Education Reforms, Targets Better Schools and Skilled Teachers

The Federal Government has outlined a series of education reforms aimed at improving school infrastructure, teacher quality, digital learning, technical education and access to education across Nigeria.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, disclosed this while speaking at the opening of the 85th Joint Consultative Committee on Education Plenary Meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The meeting, themed “Infrastructural Development and Teacher Motivation: Panacea for Improved Learning Outcomes,” brought together education stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s education system.

Represented by the Director overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Folake Olatunji-Davies, Alausa said the Federal Government’s approach goes beyond constructing physical facilities to also improving teacher capacity and the overall learning environment.

Digital Learning, STEM and Better Infrastructure

According to the minister, the government has introduced the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative as a coordinated framework for transforming the education sector.

The initiative focuses on areas including quality assurance, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), STEM education, digitalisation, inclusion and improved learning environments.

The minister also highlighted the Renewed Hope Energising Education Programme and the Next Gen Student Hostel Projects at institutions including Yaba College of Technology and Lagos State University as examples of ongoing infrastructure interventions.

He said the government is also strengthening education in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical sciences through the rehabilitation and upgrading of medical schools as well as engineering and technology faculties in tertiary institutions.

These interventions, he explained, are intended to help institutions produce graduates with the skills needed to contribute to national development.

Government Expands Digital and Vocational Education

Alausa further disclosed that the National Digital Learning Initiative is deploying smart classrooms and digital learning resources across the country.

The initiative is expected to expand access to technology-enabled education while strengthening digital literacy among both learners and teachers.

The Federal Government is also intensifying efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children through targeted enrolment campaigns, alternative learning pathways and stronger collaboration with state governments and development partners.

At the tertiary level, the ministry is establishing and upgrading vocational and innovation hubs in federal polytechnics and colleges of education to equip learners with practical, industry-relevant skills for employment and self-reliance.

Rivers Commits to Teacher Welfare

Speaking through the State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara said his administration remains committed to improving educational infrastructure while investing in teachers.

The governor described the teacher as a critical factor in determining whether students succeed, stressing the importance of teacher training, capacity building and welfare.

He said the state was investing in the renovation and construction of schools, improved learning environments and the professional development of educators.

Education Requires Collective Action

Alausa called on state governments, local communities, development partners and private-sector organisations to complement Federal Government interventions.

He stressed that sustainable improvements in education require effective implementation, accountability and collaboration across all levels of government and other stakeholders.

He urged participants at the plenary to develop practical recommendations that could translate into measurable improvements in schools, colleges and other learning institutions.

“Let us ensure that the outcomes of this meeting translate into tangible improvements in our schools and colleges and other learning institutions,” he said.

The meeting comes as Nigeria continues efforts to address challenges affecting its education system, including infrastructure gaps, teacher development, digital access and the persistent problem of children being excluded from formal education.
