The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 24 new academic programmes for Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, to commence in the 2026/2027 academic session.
The approval was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ilorin by the university’s Director of University Relations, Professor Saeedat Aliyu.
According to the statement, the approval was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jimoh Shaykh-Luqman, and signed by the NUC’s Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar Girei.
Professor Aliyu explained that the newly approved programmes consist of 14 undergraduate and 10 postgraduate programmes, expanding the university’s academic offerings across engineering, health sciences, education, architecture, business, and the arts.
Newly Approved Undergraduate Programmes
The undergraduate programmes approved by the NUC include:
- B.Sc. Architecture
- B.Sc. Quantity Surveying
- B.Sc. Surveying and Geoinformatics
- Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.)
- B.Ed. Educational Technology
- B.Ed. Guidance and Counselling
- B.Ed. Health Education
- B.Ed. Entrepreneurship Education
- B.Sc. Insurance and Risk Management
- B.Ed. Technology Education
- Bachelor of Community Health Science
- B.Eng. Computer Engineering
- B.Eng. Industrial and Production Engineering
- B.Eng. Biomedical Engineering
Newly Approved Postgraduate Programmes
The approved postgraduate programmes include:
- M.A. Fine and Applied Arts
- Ph.D. Fine and Applied Arts
- M.A. Performing Arts
- Ph.D. Performing Arts
- M.A. Linguistics
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Technology (M.Tech.), and Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology
- Ph.D. Hospitality and Tourism Management
- Ph.D. Public Administration
- Ph.D. Mass Communication
Reacting to the development, Vice-Chancellor Professor Jimoh Shaykh-Luqman expressed appreciation to members of the university community who contributed to the successful resource verification exercise conducted by the National Universities Commission.
He congratulated the staff for their dedication and commitment, noting that the approval reflects the institution’s readiness to expand quality teaching and research.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards, advancing research, and promoting community development.
He added that the newly approved programmes would strengthen KWASU’s capacity to produce highly skilled graduates equipped to meet national and global development needs across diverse sectors.
The approval represents another milestone in the university’s efforts to broaden access to quality higher education and respond to the growing demand for specialised knowledge and professional training in Nigeria.
