Ondo State Governor and Visitor to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the appointment of Professor Tomola Marshal Obamuyi as the seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
Professor Obamuyi will officially assume office on July 8, 2026, taking over from Professor Olugbenga Ige, whose tenure concludes on July 7, 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the university’s Deputy Registrar for Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Victor Akinpelumi. According to the statement, Obamuyi emerged as the successful candidate after a rigorous selection process involving 15 professors who were screened and interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.
A distinguished Professor of Finance, Obamuyi brings more than three decades of teaching, research and academic leadership experience. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Management Science from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in 2005 and later obtained a Certificate in Financial Technology from the NYU Stern School of Business in 2019.
Throughout his academic career, he has supervised 34 postgraduate students to completion and served as an external examiner in 223 postgraduate oral examinations across universities in Nigeria, South Africa and India. He has also participated in the assessment of 88 professorial appointments nationwide.
Professor Obamuyi has maintained a long-standing relationship with AAUA since joining the institution during its transition in December 1999. Over the years, he has held several strategic positions, including Acting Head of the Department of Banking and Finance and Director of Linkages and International Programmes.
Beyond AAUA, he served as the pioneer Dean of the School of Management Technology at FUTA between 2015 and 2019 before becoming Director of the University’s Advancement Centre from 2019 to 2022. He has also held visiting professorships at the University of Lagos, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, and Redeemer’s University, Ede.
His academic contributions include securing major research grants from organisations such as TETFund, USAID and the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor commissioned by Babson College in the United States. He has published more than 80 scholarly articles and presented research papers at conferences in 13 countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Singapore.
In recognition of his contributions to academia, Obamuyi received the Africa Education Leadership Award as the Best Professor of Banking and Finance in Africa in Mauritius in 2015. He also delivered FUTA’s 99th Inaugural Lecture in 2018, titled “Finance, Entrepreneurship and Institutions: The Triple Helix for Nigeria’s Economic Growth,” and was honoured with a Festschrift the following year.
He is a Fellow of the Association of Entrepreneurship Scholars and the Nigerian Society for Financial Research. He is also an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), and the Fintech Association of Nigeria.
The university described Professor Obamuyi as a visionary academic and administrator whose extensive leadership experience, international exposure and scholarly achievements are expected to further strengthen AAUA’s academic excellence, research capacity and institutional development.
