ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria will never yield to terrorists, bandits, or any form of criminal intimidation, while assuring citizens that his administration is intensifying efforts to ease economic hardship and restore hope across the country.
The President’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Speaking on the theme, “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” Akume conveyed Tinubu’s appreciation to Nigerians for sustaining 27 uninterrupted years of democratic governance since 1999, describing the achievement as a testament to the resilience, sacrifices, and determination of citizens who fought for the return of democracy.
The service attracted top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack.
Akume paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 democratic struggle, noting that many endured imprisonment, injuries, and even death in pursuit of democratic governance.
Addressing the nation’s challenges, the SGF acknowledged the hardship faced by many Nigerians, including rising economic pressures, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement in several communities.
“Government is aware of these difficulties, shares in the pains of the people, and has heard their cries,” he said, stressing that the Tinubu administration remains committed to tackling the challenges with compassion and determination.
On the security situation, the President described recent attacks and abductions as painful reminders that more work remains to be done. He, however, assured Nigerians that the safe rescue of citizens held captive remains a top priority, while security agencies are receiving the support and resources needed to safeguard lives and communities.
“The government of Nigeria will never surrender to terror, banditry, or any form of criminal intimidation,” Tinubu stated.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather pace, the President also urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech, and divisive politics, warning that democracy must not be turned into a battleground for conflict.
He called on citizens to uphold unity, tolerance, and peaceful engagement as the nation continues its democratic journey and works toward a more secure and prosperous future.
