Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Safe School Initiative in Anambra State have arrested a man, Eric Nwombu, over alleged impersonation and unlawful possession of JAMB examination materials.

The arrest, which took place on April 14, was disclosed in a statement issued in Awka by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to Ikenga, items recovered from the suspect include eight JAMB examination slips and an exercise book containing names and examination numbers of students—materials he could not properly explain.

He said the suspect was apprehended following reports that he had been collecting 2026 JAMB examination slips from candidates who visited a cyber café in Atani to check their examination centres.

“During questioning, the suspect allegedly claimed to be a coordinator for the 2026 JAMB examinations in Atani. However, his explanation raised suspicion among the café staff, who promptly alerted the police. On noticing the approaching officers, he attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended,” Ikenga stated.

The police spokesperson added that preliminary investigations are ongoing, while the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further inquiry.

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to protect the credibility of public examinations. He also urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
