The prestigious Chevening programme has officially relaunched its British Library Fellowships, offering a unique opportunity for professionals and researchers to engage with one of the world’s most renowned cultural institutions, the British Library.
Announced in March 2026, the fellowships are designed to foster international collaboration, support research, and strengthen global networks in cultural heritage and knowledge exchange.
A Fellowship with Global Impact
The Chevening British Library Fellowships are aimed at mid-career professionals, academics, and researchers who are eager to contribute their expertise on an international stage. Each fellowship provides a 12-month placement at the British Library, enabling fellows to work closely with its vast collections while advancing their own research interests.
This initiative reflects a shared commitment between Chevening and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to promote leadership, cross-cultural dialogue, and academic collaboration.
What the Fellowship Offers
Successful applicants receive a comprehensive support package that allows them to fully focus on their research and professional development. Benefits include:
-
- Coverage of living expenses for the duration of the fellowship
- Return economy airfare to the United Kingdom
- An allowance for fellowship-related activities
- Up to £1,000 for approved project-related costs
This financial and institutional support ensures that fellows can maximise their experience while contributing meaningful insights to the British Library’s collections.
Fellowship Streams and Eligibility
Two distinct fellowship streams are currently available, each targeting specific regions and research priorities:
1. Overseas Territories Fellowship
This fellowship focuses on enhancing how the British Overseas Territories in the Atlantic and Caribbean are represented within the British Library’s collections.
Eligible applicants come from territories such as Anguilla, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and others across the region. Fellows will contribute to reshaping narratives and expanding representation within historical archives.
2. Southeast Europe Fellowship
This stream is designed for candidates from Southeast Europe, including countries such as Albania, Serbia, and Turkey.
Participants will work on improving catalogue records, conducting research, and developing accessible guides to better showcase Southeast European collections. The aim is to make these resources more inclusive and easier to understand for global audiences.
Strengthening International Collaboration
At its core, the fellowship programme is about building bridges between cultures and academic communities. By bringing international researchers into direct engagement with its collections, the British Library aims to generate new perspectives and deepen understanding of global histories.
The programme also supports the long-term vision of creating a strong alumni network of fellows who continue to collaborate, share knowledge, and contribute to research beyond the fellowship period.
As highlighted by the British Library, the initiative is intended to grow into a lasting platform for international cooperation and intellectual exchange.
Why This Fellowship Matters
In an increasingly interconnected world, access to diverse perspectives is essential for understanding history, culture, and global development. The Chevening British Library Fellowships provide a rare opportunity for professionals to influence how knowledge is curated and shared on a global scale.
Participants not only gain access to world-class resources but also play an active role in shaping how different regions and communities are represented in one of the world’s most important knowledge institutions.
